As Surreal as Reality

Today, Viivi and I walked through Pigeon Valley, which took us from the town of Uçhisar to Goreme.

The images I saw today were incredible to me.  Each of the valleys in Cappadocia are a little different, each with their own unique rock formations, but the ones in Pigeon Valley are the ones I had come to Cappadocia to see.

The photos look surreal although standing there, in reality, the landscape doesn't look any more real.

The pigeon houses were really beautiful. In some cases, we could still see some of the red designs painted on the outside windows to attract the pigeons.

The valley is full of these pigeon houses, although I haven't seen many pigeons around or at least enough pigeons to warrant all these houses.  As I walked through the houses, that had rows and rows of holes to hold the pigeons, I thought about all the pigeons that once must have filled this valley.   This is a  little video in homage to all those beautiful birds who once played such an important role in people's lives.

  2. The pigeon houses were developed to collect the pigeon droppings to use for fertilizer, but the advent of chemical fertilizers has reduced the use of pigeon fertilizer, so I guess the pigeons brought their poop elsewhere. However, some farmers still maintain their pigeon lofts because they insist that the reputation of Cappadocian fruits as the sweetest and most succulent in Turkey is entirely due to the pigeons' droppings. There are pigeons around though- they look more like morning doves from what I can tell. Maybe you can put your pigeons at home to work!
