Sounds of the city

These are the sounds of the outdoor food market in Ürgüp.  As you can hear, the market is a wonderfully noisy and bustling place except during the daily prayers.  There are 5 daily prayers in Turkey that are heard over a loudspeaker from the closest mosque.  In Ibrahimpasa everybody just goes about their business during the daily prayers, so I was surprised to see the entire market in Ürgüp  freeze and some people raise their hands in a position of prayer when the chanting started.  Total stillness and silence and then the moment the prayers stopped, the market came to life again.

  1. Busy market! Do you remember the Rue Mouffetard Market in Paris? What a special place - I bet it is still there exactly the same as it was 20 years ago.

If you go back to the market again I'd love to hear the transition from market bustle to call to prayer to silence and back to market bustle...

  4. Yes- I've never heard so much screaming about fruits and vegetables. Maybe they should try tactic at the Union Square green market??
    Thanks for reading and listening.
