Walking down the streets of New York is one of my favorite activities. I am always looking up at the buildings, archiving the sounds in my head or watching the pigeons fly. I probably look like one of those tourists who walk too slowly, but I’m no tourist, just a New Yorker who is something of a flaneur. Although I have lived in Manhattan for a long time I remain endlessly interested and curious and I keep looking.
Bird's eye view flaneur
The other day when I was coming home from the gym, walking my normal route, an odd little figure above a nail salon stopped me in my tracks. It seemed to appear out of nowhere. I must have passed this nail salon a hundred times before, but never noticed it before.
Although this figure is clearly out in the open, it felt somehow hidden and discovering it felt very personal and private. The image does not look familiar to me- perhaps it is some kind of religious figure, but that is not important. To me, it’s just an angel, an angel I discovered and I get to include him in my walk everyday now. My world got a little bigger and more magical.
It was wonderful to pay attention to my everyday environment and to discover something new. This leads me to invite you to join me to do the same. Whether you are in NY, LA, Mass or Turkey, keep your eyes open and see if you find something new in your daily. If you wish, take a photograph of it and send it to me. I thought it would be fun to collect these photos and then post them on this blog. So, if you discover something new and feel like sharing it, just email the photograph to me at speaking@hotmail.com
